Canggu invented the Bali laptop lifestyle and then buried it in traffic. The workers who stayed moved fifteen minutes up the coast: Seseh gives you fibre wifi, a pool between meetings and a village that goes quiet at 9pm — with Pererenan's flat whites still ten minutes away.
Connectivity: the honest numbers
Newer managed villas around Seseh run fibre lines that hold video calls comfortably; ask the villa for a live speed test before booking a work stay — any good manager sends one within the hour. Back-up is cheap and excellent: a local SIM or eSIM with 4G/5G covers the coast, so a router hiccup never costs you a meeting. Power cuts are rare and brief; villas with pool pumps usually have decent electrical infrastructure by necessity.
Where to work: villa, cafés, coworking
The villa wins for deep work — morning calls by the pool with rice fields for a screensaver. When you want rooms with other humans: Pererenan (10–15 min) has laptop-tolerant specialty cafés, and the Canggu–Berawa strip (15–25 min) carries Bali's densest coworking scene with day-pass options. The Seseh pattern most nomads settle into: villa mornings, café afternoons twice a week, beach at golden hour every day.
Costs and the monthly setup
A managed private-pool villa runs roughly $4,500–7,000/month direct (see our monthly rental guide); sharing a 3BR between two or three remote workers drops the per-person cost below a Canggu studio-with-scooter-noise. Add ~$100–150/month for a scooter, cheap fuel, $10–20 SIM data and warung lunches that cost less than the flat white next to them.
Visas and the long game
Standard visit visas cover one to six months (VoA extendable to 60 days; B211A up to six months). Indonesia has also been iterating on remote-work visa schemes — rules change often enough that a Bali visa agent is worth their modest fee; villa managers here can recommend one. Time-zone note: Bali (WITA, UTC+8) overlaps mornings with Sydney and evenings with Europe — US teams mean early or late calls, poolside either way.
