Munggu is what Canggu was before the world found out: a surf beach with a handful of boards in the water, a main street that still sells hardware and offerings, and rice fields running to the sand. It's also the gateway to the quiet coast — Cemagi and Seseh start where Munggu's lanes end.
The village and the beach
Munggu straddles the coast road between Canggu's outer edge and Cemagi. The village itself is refreshingly untouristed — schools, temples, warungs, a market rhythm that ignores visitors entirely. Eating and daily life
Munggu's own food scene is small but real: local warungs with genuinely local prices, a few newer cafés serving the villa crowd, and everything else ten minutes away — Pererenan south, Tanah Lot's satay stalls north. Groceries, laundry, scooter mechanics: Munggu's working main street handles the practical life better than prettier villages do.

Where exactly is Munggu in Bali?
On the south-west coast in Badung's Mengwi district, immediately north-west of Pererenan and just south-east of Cemagi and Seseh. The village runs inland from the coast road through rice fields, with Munggu Beach at its seaward end and the Tanah Lot road passing above it. In visitor terms it is where Canggu stops and the quiet coast starts — roughly 25 km from the airport, although on this island drive time tells you more than distance. Worth knowing: plenty of villas marketed as Canggu or Seseh actually sit inside Munggu.
How do you get to Munggu from the airport?
By car, in about 45–75 minutes depending on traffic. There is no public transport and no toll road this way, so the honest variable is your driver's route: the bigger roads through Kerobokan, or the wider approach via the Tanah Lot road, both beat threading a car through the Canggu shortcut. Pre-booked villa transfers meet you at arrivals, and Grab and Gojek work from the designated pickup zones if you are travelling light. Land before 7am or after 9pm and the same trip can come in under an hour.
Is there much accommodation in Munggu?
Mostly private villas, plus a few guesthouses and small surf-style stays — no resorts and no hotel strip. Villa numbers are growing fast along the lanes between the coast road and the beach, but the stock is thinner and more mixed in quality than on the Cemagi–Seseh side a few minutes north-west. If you are booking sight-unseen, check the map pin, the walking distance to the beach and whether the access lane is sealed. Searching the three villages as one area gives you far better options than filtering by village name.
How far is Munggu from Seseh and Pererenan?
Both are close: roughly 5–10 minutes north-west to Cemagi and Seseh, and about 10 minutes south-east to Pererenan's restaurant strip. Canggu's centre is 15–20 minutes the same way, and Tanah Lot around 20 minutes north up the coast with Nyanyi in between. None of these are long drives, but they are drives — there is no continuous beachfront path or promenade linking the villages. The usual pattern is to sleep on the quiet side and head south for dinner.
