Legality requires an international driving permit with motorcycle endorsement plus your home licence; police checks happen on tourist corridors. Helmets non-negotiable, rain jacket under the seat, and villas arrange delivery of well-maintained bikes — ask the manager rather than a beach kiosk.
Private drivers: the day-trip answer
For Ubud, Uluwatu, airport runs and any evening involving wine, a private driver with car runs IDR 600–900k (~$40–60) for a 8–10 hour day, less for one-way transfers. Managers keep trusted drivers on call; the same driver two or three times becomes a guide, fixer and friend. This is the correct answer for families and for every itinerary in our day-trips guide.
Ride-hailing: the gap-filler
Grab and Gojek work on the quiet coast with caveats: pickups from Seseh can take 10–20 minutes as drivers position toward Canggu, and late nights thin out. Fine for one-way hops to Pererenan dinner; less reliable as the midnight plan. Cars beat bikes for the airport; bikes beat everything for a 2km warung run.
The honest combination
Most guests settle on: scooter for the daily radius, driver for the big days, Grab as backup.
