Where beginners belong
Batu Bolong (Canggu) is the beginner wave: soft, slow, sand-bottomed enough, with surf schools lining the beach. First-timers stand up on day one here with startling regularity. Lessons: cost and choosing
Group lessons run IDR 350–500k (~$23–33) for two hours including board; privates IDR 600k–1m. Choose by ratio (max 4:1 for groups), certified instructors, and whether they film you — video review doubles the learning rate. Book a three-lesson package before judging yourself; day two is always the worst one.
Boards and progression
Rental boards run IDR 50–150k/day along Batu Bolong and in Pererenan; several outfits deliver to villas. The progression path from a Seseh base: lessons at Batu Bolong → unguided soft-top sessions there → first green waves with a coach → graduate to Seseh and Munggu's uncrowded peaks, where intermediate surfing becomes a private joy. Total timeline for the committed: one to three trips.
