Platforms exist for good reasons, and there are situations where paying their fees is the smart move. Here is the honest version of the comparison — what each option actually gives you, and how to decide.
The short answer
Book direct when you can verify who you're dealing with: you'll usually pay less, you can talk to the actual team before committing, and you'll get far more flexibility on check-in times, long-stay rates and special requests. Book through a platform when you can't verify the operator, when the property is new to you and has no independent footprint, or when you're booking last-minute and simply want the escrow protection. Neither answer is wrong — they solve different problems.
What platforms genuinely do well
It's worth being fair here, because a lot of "book direct" articles pretend platforms offer nothing. They offer plenty:
Payment escrow. When you pay through a major platform, the money isn't released to the host until after you check in. If the villa doesn't exist, or is materially not as described, you have a formal route to a refund. That single feature is why platforms became dominant.
Verified review history. Reviews on a large platform are tied to completed stays. A villa with a hundred reviews and a high average has been tested by a hundred real guests — that's meaningful evidence you can't easily fake.
Standardised cancellation policies. You know exactly what happens if you cancel 30 days out, because the policy is enforced by the platform, not negotiated case by case.
A resolution process. If something goes wrong mid-stay, there is a third party to escalate to. With a bad direct operator, there isn't.
What direct booking genuinely does better
Price. Platforms charge guests a service fee and charge hosts a commission. On a week-long villa stay, the combined platform cut is significant — and most independent operators will share part of that saving with guests who book direct. We won't quote numbers because they vary by property and season; the practical move is to message the operator, ask for their direct rate, and compare it to the platform's final total with all fees included.
Communication before you commit. Platforms restrict contact until you've booked. Direct, you can ask about the actual bed configuration, the Wi-Fi speed, whether the pool is shaded in the afternoon, or whether a driver can meet you at the airport — and judge the operator by how they answer. Slow, vague replies before you've paid tell you everything about the service after.
Flexibility. Early check-in, late check-out, splitting a stay across two villas, adding a night mid-stay, arranging a chef or a surf instructor — these are conversations, and conversations work better without a booking platform in the middle. A relationship. Repeat guests who book direct get remembered — their preferred villa, their airport pickup, the fact that they like a late checkout. Platforms reset that relationship to zero each time.

When you should use a platform
Honestly: use a platform if any of these apply. The property has no independent web presence you can verify. The operator can't or won't do a quick video call. You're booking within days of arrival and have no time for due diligence. Or the direct payment terms feel off — full prepayment to a personal account, pressure to decide today, no written confirmation. When direct is clearly the better deal
Direct wins when the operator is verifiable and the stay has any complexity: a long stay, a family or group with specific needs, a return visit, or simply a trip where you want to talk to a human first.
