Two coves along from famous Padang Padang hides its understudy — and many would say its better: Thomas Beach. Same golden sand and turquoise water, a fraction of the crowd. It's our local beach, minutes from the villas.
What Thomas Beach is like
A long, golden-sand cove backed by cliffs, with a relaxed row of warungs, sunbeds and umbrellas at the foot of the stairs. Where Padang Padang packs its sand shoulder-to-shoulder in high season, Thomas keeps room to walk, swim and stretch out — the trade-off for a slightly longer stairway down.
Swimming and surf
Thomas is one of the Bukit's better swimming beaches at mid to high tide, with clear water inside the reef on calm days. Surfers find a softer beach-break peak here when the swell lines up, and the paddle across to Padang Padang's channel is short. As everywhere on this coast: respect the currents, and ask the warung crews about conditions.
The practical bits
Access is via a stairway off Jalan Labuan Sait (a few hundred steps — bring sandals and water). Parking sits at the top. Warungs serve nasi goreng, fresh coconuts and cold Bintang; sunbed rental is cheap. There's little shade beyond the umbrellas, so come early or late for the golden light.
