Where to Stay in Bali

Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu, Ubud, Sanur — or the quiet west coast? An honest area-by-area guide.

Area Guide · Updated July 2026 · by Casa Living Bali

Bali is many islands in one: a surf coast, a jungle interior, a resort peninsula and a string of villages in between. Choosing your base shapes the whole trip. Here's the honest version of what each area does best — and who should skip it.

Canggu & Pererenan — the scene

Cafés, gyms, co-working, surf schools, beach clubs and nightlife in one walkable(ish) sprawl. Ideal for digital nomads and social trips; the trade-off is traffic and construction. Pererenan is its calmer, food-obsessed edge. Skip if you're chasing peace.

Seseh & the quiet west coast — space and calm

Fifteen minutes north of Canggu, the villages of Seseh, Cemagi and Munggu offer rice fields, a wide black-sand beach and design-led private-pool villas — with Canggu's food scene still 10–20 minutes away. Best for families, couples and longer stays that want quiet without isolation. Skip if you need walkable nightlife. Our full Seseh guide →

Seminyak & Legian — polished beach resort life

Bali's established resort strip: international restaurants, spas, shopping and golden-sand sunset beaches. More manicured and more expensive than Canggu, with older crowds. Skip if you want village character.

Uluwatu & the Bukit — cliffs and world-class surf

White-sand coves under limestone cliffs, Bali's most famous waves, and a wave of stylish clifftop hotels. Beaches often involve stairs; distances between spots are real. Best for surfers and couples. Skip if you want flat, walkable and family-easy.

Ubud — jungle, culture, wellness

The island's cultural heart: rice terraces, temples, yoga, galleries and superb food, an hour-plus from the sea. Perfect for a first-trip split — a few nights here, then the coast. Skip if a beach is non-negotiable.

Sanur & Nusa Dua — easy and family-safe

Sanur offers calm, reef-protected water and a boardwalk — great for young kids and older travellers; Nusa Dua is the gated all-resort enclave. Both are convenient, neither is where Bali's energy lives. Skip if you're chasing character.

So — where should you stay?

First trip, want a bit of everything: split Ubud + a coast base. Social and single: Canggu. Polished resort holiday: Seminyak or Nusa Dua. Surf pilgrimage: Uluwatu. Family or a longer, calmer stay near the action: Seseh — which is why we built there. Compare the quiet west-coast villages →

Our pick for calm + access: Casa Infinity Seseh — three private-pool villas five minutes' walk from a quiet black-sand beach, 15 minutes from Canggu. See availability →

It depends on your trip: Canggu for social energy, Seminyak for polished resort life, Uluwatu for surf and cliffs, Ubud for culture and jungle, Sanur for easy family swimming, and Seseh for quiet private-pool villa stays near Canggu.
Where should families stay in Bali?
Sanur suits families wanting calm, swimmable sea; Seseh and Cemagi suit families wanting a private-pool villa, space and a quiet beach with restaurants a short drive away.
Is it better to stay in one place or move around Bali?
For trips of a week or more, a two-base split works well — typically Ubud for culture plus a coastal base like Seseh, Canggu or Uluwatu. Under a week, pick one base and day-trip.
