Echo Beach, Canggu

The surf, the sunset bars, and how Echo really compares to Batu Bolong next door.

Beach Guide · Updated July 2026 · by Casa Living Bali

Echo Beach — Batu Mejan on the maps — is Canggu's serious-surf beach: a black-sand stretch with punchy reef waves, a row of sunset bars, and a slightly rougher, more local edge than the strip at Batu Bolong ten minutes' walk away. Here is what it's actually like in 2026, and how to decide whether to base yourself near it.

What Echo Beach is (and isn't)

Echo Beach is the northern end of Canggu's beachfront, past Batu Bolong and before the sand runs on towards Pererenan. It has never been a swimming beach: the sand is dark and coarse, the shoreline is dotted with reef and rock, and at high tide the beach itself can narrow to a strip. What it does have is one of the area's better waves, a front row of warungs and bars facing the break, and the best sunset-watching setup in Canggu — you sit on a beanbag or a plastic chair, order a coconut or a cold Bintang, and watch surfers trade waves until the light goes.

If you're picturing a postcard swimming bay, look elsewhere. If you're picturing a working surf beach with good food and a big sky, Echo delivers.

The surf: who it's actually for

Echo's wave is a step up from its neighbours. It breaks over a mix of reef and sand, comes in faster and steeper than Batu Bolong, and on a solid swell it draws a confident, competitive lineup of locals, expats and travelling surfers. Lefts and rights are both on offer depending on the bank and the tide; mid tide is generally the friendliest window. On big days it gets heavy enough that most visitors are happier watching from the beach with a drink.

Beginners should not learn here. The mellow, slow-rolling wave — and all the surf schools — are at Batu Bolong, a short walk south along the sand. If you're booking lessons, our guide to surf lessons around Canggu and Seseh covers how schools work and what to pay attention to. Intermediates who have outgrown Batu Bolong's crowds usually make Echo their next stop, and that's the natural progression: learn at Batu Bolong, graduate to Echo.

Sunset at Echo: bars and beanbags

Sunset is Echo Beach's main event. The beachfront row runs from simple grilled-seafood warungs — a long-standing Echo tradition, where you pick fish and corn and eat at plastic tables on the sand — up to La Brisa, the driftwood-built beach club at the north end that has become one of Canggu's most photographed venues. In between sit a handful of casual bars with beanbags on the sand.

An honest tip: the beanbag bars are interchangeable — pick the one with a free front-row spot rather than hunting for a specific name. La Brisa is genuinely beautiful but gets very busy from late afternoon in high season; if you want a daybed at the weekend, arrive early or book ahead. The seafood warungs are the best value on the beach and the most "old Canggu" experience left here.

Echo Beach vs Batu Bolong

The two beaches sit on the same sand and blur into each other, but they have different jobs. Batu Bolong is the social one: beginner wave, surf schools, Old Man's, the busy café street running down to the sand. Echo is the surfier one: a proper wave, a slightly older crowd, seafood grills instead of a party strip. Walking between them along the beach takes roughly 10–15 minutes and is one of the nicest free things to do in Canggu — far better than riding between the two on the narrow connecting roads.

For a full picture of the neighbouring strip, read our Batu Bolong street guide; if you're weighing this whole side of Canggu against the Berawa side, the Berawa guide breaks down that choice.

Staying near Echo Beach

Here's the trade-off nobody puts in the listing photos: staying right on the beach road means noise — bar sound systems, traffic on narrow lanes, and early-morning surf traffic. Most people who stay a month or more end up a few minutes inland, where the lanes go quiet at night and you ride or walk in for surf and sunset. Practical notes

Parking by the beach is scooter-first; cars queue for a small paid lot and it fills at sunset in dry season. Board rental is available on the sand but the selection is better at Batu Bolong. The black sand gets genuinely hot from late morning — bring sandals for the walk to the water. There are no lifeguard flags in the way you might expect from Australia; treat the ocean with respect and watch where locals swim (mostly, they don't — they surf). For anything beyond a scraped knee, see our list of clinics and pharmacies around Canggu. And if Canggu's pace overall feels like too much, the coast just north — Pererenan, Cemagi, Seseh — is covered in our guide to quieter alternatives to Canggu.

Frequently asked questions

Is Echo Beach good for beginner surfers?
Not really. Echo Beach breaks over reef and sand and is punchier and faster than Batu Bolong next door. Beginners are better off walking ten minutes down the sand to Batu Bolong, where the wave is slower and the surf schools operate. Echo suits confident intermediates and up, especially on a mid tide.
Can you swim at Echo Beach?
Swimming at Echo Beach is possible but not ideal — there is reef, rocks and current, and most of the water is taken up by surfers. If you want a proper swim, Berawa's beach break or a villa pool is a better bet. Treat Echo as a surf-and-sunset beach rather than a swimming beach.
Is Echo Beach walkable from Batu Bolong?
Yes. Echo Beach and Batu Bolong sit on the same stretch of black sand, roughly a 10–15 minute walk apart along the beach. Walking is usually faster and far more pleasant than riding between the two, since the connecting roads are narrow and busy.
