Where to Stay in Canggu

Batu Bolong, Berawa, Echo Beach, Babakan or Pererenan — Canggu's strips compared for real trips.

Area Guide · Updated August 2026 · by Casa Living Bali

"Canggu" on a booking map covers five strips that feel nothing alike — the difference between sleeping through bass at 1am and hearing frogs. Choose the strip first, the villa second.

Batu Bolong: beginner surf, cafés and the most noise

Base here for a first trip built around surf lessons and walking everywhere. One street runs from the rice-field shortcut to a black-sand beach with Canggu's slowest, friendliest wave, lined with cafés, board rental and bars. It is also the loudest, most crowded pocket in the area. Batu Bolong guide →

Berawa: families, gyms and the Finns side

Berawa is the practical choice for families and anyone with a training routine. Southeast of Batu Bolong, it grew around long-stay residents: supermarkets, the international school, big gyms, Finns Recreation Club with its pool and kids' club, and Finns and Atlas on the sand. Newer and more built-up, less village. Berawa guide →

Echo Beach: bigger waves, sunset bars, slightly calmer

Stay near Echo if you already surf and want sunset without a queue. The wave breaks faster and steeper than Batu Bolong's over reef and sand — a natural graduation, and no place to learn. The beanbag bars facing the break are Canggu's best sunset. Echo Beach guide →

The inland lanes and Babakan: where long stays actually live

Move inland if you are staying a month and want to sleep. Babakan and the lanes behind it sit 10–15 minutes from the beach among rice fields — quieter nights, more space, gentler rates, total scooter dependence in exchange. Most of Canggu's returning remote workers end up here. Babakan guide →

Pererenan: west, food-led, half a beat behind

Choose Pererenan if you care more about dinner than nightlife. Just west of Echo Beach, it is now the coast's food-and-coffee hub — specialty roasters, wood-fired Italian, wine bars — with a low-key surf beach at the end of the road and none of Batu Bolong's crush. Pererenan guide →

When to choose Seseh instead

Pick Seseh over Canggu when quiet is worth a 15–20 minute drive. Seseh keeps the rice fields and the empty black-sand beach Canggu traded away. It costs you spontaneity: you drive to dinner rather than walk. Long stays usually take that deal; first-timers on a short week usually should not. Where to stay in Seseh →

Verdict for most trips: a quiet lane within ten minutes of Batu Bolong beats sleeping on the strip. Villa Mochi — 2BR private pool, 4.91★ →

Frequently asked questions

Which part of Canggu is quietest at night?
The inland lanes around Babakan and the rice fields behind Pererenan. Bass from the Batu Bolong bars carries a long way on still nights, so anything within a few hundred metres of that strip can be loud until late; a lane 10 minutes inland is a different world.
Is Canggu walkable, or do I need a scooter?
Each strip is walkable end to end, but not to each other. Batu Bolong to Berawa is a 10–15 minute ride on a narrow, busy shortcut, so most people rent a scooter or use Grab and Gojek daily.
Batu Bolong or Berawa for a first trip?
Batu Bolong if you are learning to surf or travelling solo, Berawa if you have kids or a gym routine. Batu Bolong puts the beginner wave, cafés and bars within walking distance; Berawa has the supermarkets, the recreation club and calmer streets.
