There is no single best month to surf Bali — there is a best month for your level. Beginners can learn at Batu Bolong in any month of the year. Intermediates and above chasing Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Bingin want the dry season, roughly May to September. And wet-season visitors are not out of luck: the swell simply switches coasts. Here is the full logic, then the matrix.
How Bali's surf seasons actually work
Bali sits in the firing line of Indian Ocean swell all year round — consistency is rarely the problem. What flips between seasons is the wind. From roughly April to October, dry-season southeast trade winds blow offshore on the island's west-facing coasts: the Bukit peninsula (Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin, Balangan) and the Canggu–Seseh strip. From November to March, wet-season westerlies reverse the pattern, turning the east coast on — Keramas, Sanur's reefs, Nusa Dua — while west-coast spots get bumpy by mid-morning. Water sits around 27–29°C in every month; you will never need more than boardshorts or a light rash top. For the general weather backdrop, see Bali weather by month and our dry vs wet season comparison.
Beginners: almost any month works
If you are learning, ignore most surf-season advice — it is written for reef waves you should not be on yet. What you need is small, soft, forgiving surf, and Bali serves that year-round. Batu Bolong in Canggu is the classic learner wave: a long, slow, sand-bottomed-feeling roller (it is actually flat reef) with board rentals and instructors on the beach every single day of the year. Nearby Seseh and Cemagi offer quieter peaks once you can paddle yourself around — see the Seseh surf guide. On the Bukit, the inside section at Padang Padang ("Baby Padang") is a friendly dry-season learner and improver wave, a world away from the famous barrel breaking further out on big swells.
The only seasonal adjustment for beginners is timing: in the wet season, surf before late morning, when winds are lightest and the afternoon storm is still hours away. Mornings in February at Batu Bolong can be as glassy and uncrowded as any day in July. Lessons run year-round — see surf lessons in Canggu & Seseh and surf lessons in Uluwatu.
Intermediate and advanced: chase the dry season on the Bukit
If you can take off on a reef wave with confidence, the answer sharpens: May to September on the Bukit is world-class. Consistent groundswell, offshore trades all day, and the full menu — Uluwatu's long walls, Bingin's mechanical little barrel, Impossibles' racetrack, and on the right swell, the Padang Padang barrel itself. June, July and August are the most consistent months — and the most crowded lineups; serious surfers increasingly favour May and September, or even April and October, trading a touch of consistency for space in the water. Canggu's beach breaks and rivermouth peaks also do their best dry-season work, detailed in the Seseh surf guide.
In the wet season, experienced surfers switch coasts: Keramas — a fast, hollow right over lava reef — is the marquee wave from November to March, with Sanur and Nusa Dua handling size on the right days. Dawn patrols on the west coast still produce clean sessions before the wind swings; you just stop planning your day around an afternoon Uluwatu session.
Month-by-spot matrix
| Months | Batu Bolong (beginner) | Uluwatu / Padang / Bingin | Keramas / east coast |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan–Feb | Good, mornings | Dawn only, wind-affected | Prime |
| Mar–Apr | Good | Improving, uncrowded | Good, fading |
| May–Jun | Good | Prime, still roomy in May | Occasional |
| Jul–Aug | Good, busy | Prime, crowded | Rare |
| Sep–Oct | Good | Prime Sep, easing Oct | Improving |
| Nov–Dec | Good, mornings | Morning windows | Prime |
One calendar note: Nyepi, Bali's day of silence, falls in March — no one surfs, drives or flies for 24 hours, so plan around it.
